Victoria
University Library maintains a number of special
collections
in various subject areas. Included in the collections are
printed books, manuscripts and papers. Many of the items are
catalogued, and inventories and finding aids are available
for the manuscript collections.
Materials
in special collections are for use in the Library only and
do not circulate. Advanced notice is required
for manuscript use. Please see

Norman
Jewison Archive
|
The archive of celebrated Canadian film director-producer Norman Jewison
contains photographs and publicity materials, papers and correspondence,
shooting scripts and schedules primarily for films directed or produced
by Jewison between the years 1975 and 2003. Materials related to the
films Fiddler on the Roof,
And Justice for All, A Soldier's
Story, Moonstruck, The Hurricane, The Statement and others undertaken
by Jewison are held in this collection.
Norman
Jewison graduated from Victoria College, University of Toronto in
1949. As a student he was involved in writing, directing and acting
in various theatrical productions, including the All-Varsity Revue
in 1949. In 2004 Norman Jewison was appointed Chancellor of Victoria

Northrop Frye (1912-1991) Scholar, literary critic, and teacher. A
comprehensive collection of correspondence, literary manuscripts,
published work, professional and personal writings, photographs and
audio-visual materials of this world-renowned scholar and professor
of English. There are, in addition, over 2000 monographs annotated
by Frye in the collection. The author of such works as Fearful
Symmetry and Anatomy of Criticism, Northrop Frye joined
Victoria College as lecturer in 1939 and became Principal of the college
in 1959. Frye was Chancellor of Victoria University from 1978-1991.

Virginia
Woolf & the
Bloomsbury Group |
|
|
A significant research collection of more than 3000 items, includings
books by and about Virginia Woolf and other members of the Bloomsbuiry
Group. The collection contains all the books hand-printed by Leonard
and Virginia Woolf including many variant issues, bindings and proof
copies. The design interest of the Bloomsbury group are represented
by the work of Vanessa Bell, Roger Fry, Duncan Grant, Clive Bell and
Stephen Tomlin. Tomlin's bronze busts of Virginia Woolf and Lytton
Stratchey are displayed in the Special Collections Reader Room. A
substantial number of ephemeral publications, press catalogues, announcements
and notices enhance the research utility of the collections. The Kenneth
Clark and the S.P. Rosenbaum collection include Bloomsbury related
material as well. |

Samuel
Taylor Coleridge |
|

A
research collection of international significance containing manuscripts
and printed books belonging to Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772 - 1834)
and others of his circle, including William Wordsworth, Robert Southey
and Charles Lamb. It provides an especially rich resource for the
study of Coleridge's private papers, marginalia and informal conversation.
Foremost among the manuscripts is the 'Autograph of Christabel'
presented by Coleridge to Sara Hutchinson. Other items of note are
Coleridge's unpublished 'Opus Maximum' and transcripts of many of
his sermons and lectures

Baxter
Collection |
|
|
A
comprehensive collection of nineteenth century prints produced in
England by the engraver and lithographer George Baxter (1804-1867).
Includes prints from two of Baxter's licensees (Kronheim and Le
Blonde) and contains portrait and landscape prints as well as prints
produced to decorate needle-boxes.

Jones |

Peter
Jones (1802-1856) Ojibwa Chief, Methodist missionary and educator.
Correspondence, addresses, draft autobiography, draft history of
the Ojibwa Indians, notes for sermons, and notes for addresses on
North American Indians. Articles about Jones and material relating
to his wife, Eliza Jones also form part of the collection. Jones'
"Anecdote Book" and miniature portraits of Peter and Eliza
Jones are highlights of this collection.
