FOR DISTANCE EDUCATORS ON OUR WEBSITE THIS WEEK

“How to Ace a Virtual Interview," by Evelyn Beck

First off, to nab an on-line teaching job, you had better know your way around the Internet.

“The main thing I look for is somebody who’s got a degree of comfort on-line, who has navigated websites, set up e-mail,” says Catherine Flynn, Director of Faculty for the School of Arts & Sciences for Kaplan College Online. “I had an instructor once who applied to teach on-line who cut and pasted her résumé into an e-mail message instead of sending it as an attachment; that didn’t bode well for teaching on-line. Another asked about the possibility of doing face-to-face instead of on-line training; somebody who wants hands-on training isn’t a good candidate, either....”

Read all about it online in the Adjunct Advocate magazine (REGISTRATION REQUIRED).

FROM THE MESSAGE BOARDS: "Respect for Field?"

To reply to the posting, go to Distance Education Faculty.

    Hello All:

As an online adjunct, I find the reaction to my job by those in and outside of the education field to often be a bit rude! I often get comments along these lines:

"Are those online classes for REAL schools or just for dimploma mills?"
"How can you spend all day online? Wouldn't you rather have real students?"

Do any of you receive this reaction? I am generally not one to care at all what others think. But I must admit, I am beginning to hate telling folks what I do for a living.

IN FUTURE ISSUES OF THE ADJUNCT ADVOCATE:

We're busy at work on a piece about RateMyProfessor.com. Ever looked yourself up on the site? Ever browsed the comments about your teaching colleagues? If so, you're not alone. Read about it the January/February 2007 issue.
