IN JANUARY OF this year, trustees of Southeastern Community College in Iowa learned about a plan to offer incentive pay for retired SCC faculty and staff to return to the college to teach part-time. The college currently employs over 100 part-time faculty on two campuses. No action was taken because cost details were not finalized, but the plan calls for retirees from the college to be paid 50 percent more than the standard adjunct fee. College president Jim Richardson devised the plan due to the fact that low per course adjunct salaries have made it difficult to attract retired faculty to teach in an adjunct capacity.
